Compensatory measures for wintering geese in relation to construction of an energy cluster

Research area and project description
The purpose of the project is to develop and test an energetic model for the Taiga Bean Goose, and to use this model for an assessment of compensatory measures in relation to construction of an energy cluster near one of the important goose wintering sites.

The energetic model will be parameterized using measurements of energy intake and energy expenditure. Intake is measured based on field measurements of food and energy intake of different food types, while expenditure is estimated from tracking of GPS-tagged geese with accelerometers to calculate activity budgets and flight distances, as well as weather data to assess energy expenditure during thermoregulation. Geese will be captured and marked in years 1 and 2 and fitted with modern GPS collars collecting the necessary data.

The PhD project runs concurrently with a consultancy project carried out by Aarhus University, and it is intended that the results from the 2 projects must complement each other. Together, these constitute an adaptive monitoring and implementation plan, which will ensure the greatest possible security for maintaining the local wintering population of Taiga Bean geese in this important wintering area, while accommodating a growing societal need for green energy.

Qualifications and specific competences
The successful applicant must have a recent, relevant Master’s degree (in the field of biology) with an excellent academic record. Prior experience with wildlife or avian applied ecology is an advantage, as is experience with data processing and modelling.

The candidate is expected to have good communication skills, a collaborative workstyle, the ability to work independently and the ability to publish at international scientific level. An excellent command of English is a must.
